Had Dead Space never been released, players' opinions of The Callisto Protocol would likely be much higher. Unfortunately, The Callisto Protocol has almost universally been the loser of these comparisons, with both fans of the original Dead Space and new players who were inspired to play it during the months leading up to The Callisto Protocol's release agreeing that it did everything The Callisto Protocol does better. While there are enough differences between The Callisto Project's plot and gameplay to make it stand out somewhat from Dead Space, the fact that the game's developer went out of its way to position The Callisto Protocol as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, combined with all the similarities, has led many players to compare every aspect of the two. Not only do both titles put players in the shoes of a blue-collar worker stranded in a run-down deep space facility ravaged by an alien pathogen, but each also features a unique combat system that encourages players to converse resources by strategically dismembering enemies. Directed by Glen Schofield and developed by a team of many former Visceral Games and Sledgehammer Games staff members, The Callisto Protocol shares more than a few similarities with Dead Space in terms of both plot and gameplay. From the moment the game was first announced, The Callisto Protocol was billed as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, and it isn't hard to see why.
